neteen year old Alisha Dixon never imagined that the fliers she once hung in the halls of Berklee College of Music would lead her to where she stands today. Only a year later, the band Dixon tried so persistently to form, Same Mistake Twice, has already had a run on the Vans Warped Tour as well as several short East Coast tours. Recently, the pop-punk quintet competed in tri-state showcase, winning first prize and a whole new fan base. The female-fronted band has a sound similar to the internationally known Paramore with heavy instrumentals reminiscent of Flyleaf.

As we already know thanks to a previous “Band You Should Know” feature- Barely Blind are a rock/pop-punk quartet based in the South East of Texas , made up of Brad Cuccio (bass & vocals), Reid Guidry (guitar), Will Smith (drums) and Stephen Salisbury (guitar). With a strong friendship from high school, mastered tracks and a get up and go attitude these boys had no other goal than to take on the world with their music. First with their “The Way We Operate” EP selling more that 10,000 copies and now again with their most recent release “My Life With A Giant” EP.

The Sophomore Beat is probably one of the most underrated bands from Maine that there is right now. Then again most bands from Maine are. This four-piece indie/pop band from Portland not only have been working hard to get themselves out there, but they’re also currently planning the release of their brand new full-length album Hi, Technology. The band has been playing their way through New England like no other and if you’re lucky they just might stop by in your town.

A lot of new records that come out are poorly put together and were rushed or just made to make it on the radio. Of Mice & Men have taken whatever outlook you had on new albums and smashes it into the ground. Ever since this project had gotten announced I had my hopes set so high. With most albums I have my hopes set high for the album usually falls short, Of Mice & Men was exactly what I was hoping for. Every track the put up and had demos for where all phenomenal and I knew that when this release came out it would be hard to dislike anything about it.

In the last decade, the music industry has certainly taken an interesting turn. The 1990’s was a hugely profitable time for major labels. Mega pop stars like Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys went multi-platinum, selling millions of CD’s at $18.95 each or higher. The labels themselves were the gatekeepers of the industry. They alone had the means to record albums, distribute them internationally, and effectively market the artist. All of that changed, however, around 2000, when labels met their worst enemy: new technology.

From Boston, Massachusetts come five musicians that together form The Venetia Fair. The name was extremely unfamiliar to me, but I ended up questioning why I had not heard them before after taking a listen to their album, The Circus. The band creates a sound together that really drew me in. Classifying the group into a genre of music is quite a challenge, for they have a mix of rock, punk, hardcore, and basically any other genre you can think up. Needless to say, the band is definitely crazy, but what makes up for it is the fact that they are also crazy good.

There’s a reason why The Emptiness Tour has sold out every show to date. It may be because it has a killer line up with The Word Alive, Of Mice & Men, We Came As Romans, A Skylit Drive, and Alesana, but I think it’s because each of these bands has a energy and stage presence that’s rare to find. On February 20th, I had the pleasure to see these bands at The Crofoot in Pontiac, MI. I’m confident in saying it was one of the greatest shows I’ve ever attended.
