What’s nationwide, packed with music, and helping people around the world? The answer is the Take Action! Tour. The tour was created by both Sub City and Hopeless Records in 1999. Originally called the Plea for Peace Tour, is an annual spring tour that not only hosts several musical artists, but uses the setting to inform the attendants of current issues and provides ways to help out. They say that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. This is true for many things, like when a band starts to big, but not big enough to get noticed by our mainstream. Las Vegas’ best kept secrets are their bands, until those bands find their big break. The most well-known bands from Las Vegas as of right now are Panic! AT The Disco, Escape The Fate, The Cab, and The Killers. One band hoping to join the ranks of these bands is Play For Keeps, a rock/alternative/pop punk band also from the city.

So a little over a week ago, I received a email whilst on Skype with Shred's Editor – Kayley. It was from this fairly unknown band, I Only Date Models. Never discarding an email from a band I found myself browsing through their myspace, and to be quite honest I wasn't overly impressed to begin with. A basic layout, nice but nothing eye catching or exciting and I thought I was going to be disappointed with their sound too as I was expecting nothing more than the same old same old. But then I hit that little play button at the right hand corner of the screen and my original assumption was forgotten almost instantly. Basically what I'm saying is, you know the phrase “Don't judge a book by it's cover”? Well, it couldn't be more true in this situation.

From Boston, MA comes the band Rescue Aurora; a band that brings the most refreshing female vocals since Hayley Williams and a powerful alternative rock sound, rivaling that of VersaEmerge, to back it up. This five-piece band is fronted by Brittany Flynn (vocals) with support from Cooper Heinrichs (guitar, backup vocals), John Boles (guitar, backup vocals), Lauren Baker (bass), and Jesse Hangen (drums). The pop/punk genre has been hugely successful in the past five years or so. That might explain the exponentially growing number of long-haired, lip-ringed hipsters with ripped jeans and skater shoes getting together in garages to start their own projects. The Christian influenced band Sweet Hollow Drive is following the famous recipe for success. Sweet Hollow Drive is from the musically fertile Long Island, New York region. They achieved local popularity in 2008 when they released their first full-length CD called The Perfect Blue.

Finnish “love metal” band HIM hits a homerun with their seventh studio album release, Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, Chapters 1-13. With the first single “Heartkiller” released in December, fans got a taste of HIM’s familiar hooks and dark lyrics with a refreshing new twist of hope shining through and a bit of synth mixed in. The album doesn’t disappoint and old and new HIM fans will find themselves enjoying the new album over and over again.

What do you do when you’re band records a full length record and starts to achieve the success you’ve dreamed of for so long? Bask in the glory, right? Wrong. For Austin Carlile, ex-vocalist for Attack Attack!, was kicked out of AA! right after finishing the album and touring for a short period of time. Now with someone else filling taking his place he had to make his next move accordingly. He contacted his friend Jaxin Hall and together the two started their new project. Of Mice & Men was born.

Peasant, which only consists of Damien DeRose from Doylestown, PA, isn’t just some regular guy making music. This album from the New Jersey band won’t make you pump your fists, but you’ll definitely tap your toes and nod your head. With a little under one million plays on their MySpace, this alternative rock band from Lebanon, NJ must be doing something right.
