Settled in the suburb of Cambridge, Massachusetts is the popular venue/restaurant The Middle East. The venue actually consists of two different places where concerts take place. The Middle East Upstairs and The Middle East Downstairs. Even though they’re both at the same place they’re completely different. In this article though, i'm going to be focusing on the upstairs part of The Middle East.

Usually, artists that tend to get nominated or even win awards are fairly well known, especially after they spend weeks on our tv screens battling their rivals on the music charts. It's a rarity to see an artist rise to fame after topping the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and then going on to win the Critics Choice Award at the BRITS all before their debut album is even released. Only tremendously talented artists are able to achieve awards that take others a lifetime to obtain so early in their career, with this being said let me introduce you to the newest UK music sensation, Miss Ellie Goulding.

Over the past week I've become a big supporter of Boston group Beneath The Sheets. The band formed in 2006 and have now released debut album Go Easy, It’s My First... on the band’s own label, Dirty White Sneaker Productions which they say is a “blend rock, dance, and hip-hop”. It’s not far off, and neither is their predication, “This is our year and we’re gonna rock it…hard.” Well it shouldn’t be anyway.

“We marry the dance ethic with the pop ethic, and make something that you can dance and sing along to.” - Yes, that’s how the five-piece Brit band New Young Pony Club puts their music into words, and it's about right. The new-wave band is from London, England forming back in 2004. Their mix of a rock and dance sound is quite intriguing, but very different to most music in the charts today. The album, The Optimist is their most recent effort, released on March 8th, 2010.

There was a time that acoustic rock was everyone’s anthem for the early spring and summer months. There was a time when the pain struck chords of Dashboard Confessional and Ace Enders rang loud within us all. But the strong sound quickly faded and gave way to the ukulele infused, The Beatles inspired sound of acts such as NeverShoutNever and Plug In Stereo. Change is not necessarily bad, in fact the previously mentioned bands have paved the way for an entire new sub genre, but as the industry becomes saturated with copycat bands it is refreshing to see a few artists returning to the earlier rock sound. Great Big Planes, hailing from the town of Toms River, NJ, has brought back the rock to acoustic rock.

These Walls Are Oceans, an unsigned band from Enid, OK and Austin, TX, took a semi-nontraditional route when it comes to releasing albums. For their new record Perspective, they released a physical version of it and a digital version that can be downloaded for free on their MySpace. The band wanted to digress from gaining profit from album sales. According to their blog post on MySpace, they did this so “people may e

What comes to mind when you think of an island? Sand, waves, coconuts, and a cool breeze most likely. How about a virtual band? A virtual techno-rock-hip hop band at that. Gorillaz creates their own loving island with their latest release, Plastic Beach. It’s a quirky, original album that explores the world that was given to us and how we interact with it. Whether you see it as a home run or a flop, creator David Albarn takes you on a ride through his own Plastic Beach.
