A Day To Remember Interview

Unfortunately due to the dim lighting in the dressing room we decided not to post the video for this interview. However, we have transcribed it all below for you to read!

First off we’d just like to congratulate you on successfully having sold-out your entire UK tour!

All: Thank you so much

Shred: So how is it to be back in the UK? Is it good to be here?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Oh yeah. It’s usually really cold, dark and rainy and this time it’s been really bright and the weather hasn’t been that bad. So that really helps.

Josh (A Day To Remember): We’ve seen the sun a few times

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Actually everyday except yesterday

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Yes so that helps and it’s been awesome! The shows have been really great as usual. So thats always been (the weather) the only downside and it hasn’t been there this time.

Shred: So you’ve just come back from a long trip out east where you visited Australia, Hong Kong and then Tokyo. How was it? Lets start with Australia.

Josh (A Day To Remember): Awesome. We were on a tour called Soundwave which is a big touring festival with a bunch of really cool bands, a bunch of friends that we knew from back over in the states. It was just awesome. Every single day there was just a ton of kids and it was cool for us being over there, it was our second time and it was just sweet, we had a really good time.

Shred: Great! So Japan must have been pretty different culture wise, how was your time out there? What were the crowds like?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Japan was awesome!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Oh yeah!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I mean they don’t come out in force like in the UK or the US but all the kids that are there want to be there so bad. They were all jumping up and down, singing our words even though they can’t really speak our language

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): They seemed really dedicated too. Like we’d never been there before but people would show up with all these gift bags that they’d bought us stuff with and we’d never experienced stuff like that before so it was just awesome to go there for the first time and have people connect with you like that.

Shred: Sounds brilliant! So you’re currently touring with the Architects and Your Demise. How does everyone get along? Are you fans of the bands?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Yeah we are fans of those bands. This is our sixth time back to the UK so we’ve definitely heard their names a lot and we’d heard them because we’re over here so often. You know they’re both two bands that do extremely well, they’re really talented and they fit in with what we’re trying to do, they’re all nice guys and when we put this (the tour) together obviously people were really excited about the package. The show wouldn’t have been what it is now without both of those bands, so we’re real thankful to those guys for even being interested in doing it in the first place, it’s been awesome so far.

Shred: So your next stop is back home for the Toursick tour. What can fans expect from the upcoming shows?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): It’s pretty much a completely different show. It’s bigger, everything is bigger on the next upcoming tour.

Josh (A Day To Remember): It’s our first A-market headliner ever.

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Thats right.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Usually we just co-headline

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Right. We can’t really say much about it, I mean I think people are definitely going to be surprised. We’re going absolutely crazy.

Josh (A Day To Remember): Yeah, It’s not going to be just like any show where you go see a band headline

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): The goal is for people to come to these venue’s and be like ‘What the fuck? What just happened?’ and that is what’s going to happen!

Shred: It sounds very exciting!

Josh (A Day To Remember): It’s more than us just playing our songs.

Shred: So do you feel quite a bit of pressure being the solo headliners now?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I’m excited

Josh (A Day To Remember): I’m more excited

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): People are going to shit their pants

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I think I just did.

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I’m going to for sure

Josh (A Day To Remember): I already did (Everyone laughs)

Shred: So lets talk about the legendary Warped Tour. You were on it last year for the complete run, are there any plans to make an appearance this year at all?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): They were talking to us about doing a few days when we were having off days and stuff but you know we’ve done Warped tour two years in a row now, this would have been the third time in a row if we played a particular city whenever and I mean we plan on doing it next year but we don’t know if that’s actually going to happen. That would be four years in a row in some markets and it’s not smart to do stuff like that so we’re going to take a break. It sucks because you know we really enjoy Warped tour it’s something we’ve grown to be really attached to. So I mean it sucks but you’ve got to take a break here and there.

Shred: That’s definitely fair enough! So we’re on fourth record territory right now, are there any set plans?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): We’ve been writing pretty much non-stop since the last record came out. We had an entire song that didn’t even get used for it (Homesick) so that was like immediate and then yeah we’ve been writing non-stop, we have a few demos – I’m really excited about what we have. All the stuff that isn’t complete songs yet, there’s a ton of it, we have something like fifteen sixteen song ideas and we plan on putting out a ten song record. So I mean we’ve got a lot to work with, we’re going to remain writing and we plan on going into the studio around summertime but it kind of depends on where we are with the record at that time because it’s not something we’re interested in forcing. So we plan on doing it then but if it doesn’t work out then it doesn’t work out.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): (Whips out his iPhone) Dare me to play it? Haha! Only kidding!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): You wish! (Everyone laughs)

Shred: When you’re writing how does a song come together?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): That, you see, is different every time. Like for instance the other day Neil (ADTR’s guitarist) was just screwing around checking his guitar and he played two parts in a row that me and Kevin were like ‘Woah that’s really cool’ and we recorded it on our phone so we wouldn’t forget.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): (Brings out phone again) Want me to play it? Nahhh I’m not gonna play it! (Everyone laughs)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): But seriously sometimes it’ll happen like that, sometimes it’ll happen where I’ll just hear a song and then go into the back to figure it out on guitar, then that’s an entire song right there. We’ve had a few of those so far for the next record.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Josh has a few bass solo’s

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Kevin wrote a few R’n'B tracks. Yeah

Kevin (A Day To Remember): It’s going to be an A Day To Remember record (laughs)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Right. An RnB A Day To Remember record

Josh (A Day To Remember): I’m in a food coma (Everyone cracks up laughing)

Shred: That’s the best line yet!

Shred: Do you have any goals for the next record? On adtrofficial.com you made a post asking the fans what they’d like to see on the new album. Is that something that’s important to you, knowing what the fans want out of your music?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Absolutely. I mean I didn’t actually get a lot of responses from people actually taking that (the post) seriously but I mean yeah, it is important to us. We’re always kind of growing ourselves, you know we’re getting older and stuff but we’re always going to write an ‘A Day To Remember’ record. I’ve actually seen a lot of people really worried just because of how Homesick has done for us, they’re scared we’re going to write this ‘all pop’ record and it’s like – when did we do that? Why would we do that? I don’t know, we’re planning on writing something on this record that’s really going to knock people over and I think it’s gonna happen. I’m really excited about what we’ve come up with so far.

Shred: We’re all excited about it now! So, speaking of adtrofficial.com, who’s idea was it to have a site for the fans? Quite often with bands and their online fanclubs they don’t really have much to do with it, making rare appearances now and then. You guys, however, seem pretty involved. You reply to fans direct and get discussions going. Again is it important for you to have a way to connect with your fans worldwide?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Yeah absolutely. That’s always something that’s important to us, whether it be just like a live show or whatever, that’s what we’ve always built from – connecting with people. Our band always kind of feeds off of what the crowd’s doing or what they want, so it just kind of made sense.

Shred: Let’s discuss some side projects that we’ve been hearing about. Recently on your twitter accounts (Josh and Jeremy) you announced that you’ve launched your own record label, Running Man records.

Josh (A Day To Remember): Yeah.

Shred: And you’ve just signed Veara who you were just in the studio with. Was it both of you or just one of you?

Josh (A Day To Remember): It was Jeremy

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I produced the record

Shred: What was that like taking on a different role? Did you feel, almost in a way as it’s not your record, I mean you won’t be playing it -

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): It’s my record! (Laughs)

Shred: (Laughs) Okay so it is your record but how was it responsibility wise? Is it more pressure?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Absolutely not. (Laughs) I don’t know how to explain this without sounding like a tool bag.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): It’s 100% fun!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): It’s just something I enjoy doing, I do. I write music at all times whether it be for our band or just for me, that’s what makes me feel better. It’s something that I feel that I’m talented in and It’s kind of like – I’m sure there’s something you’re really confident in in yourself that you do – that’s mine, you know what I mean? So I don’t feel any pressure when it comes to something like that because I know I can help people because I’ve learned a lot from other people that I’ve worked with. I just go in and listen to these people’s songs and help them make the best out of them.

Shred: So we have a few fan questions now that have been sent in for you, we picked our favorites for today. The first one is for Josh. Craig from the US asks: “Josh, who designs the shirts for your Bambino clothing line? The designs are sick!”

Josh (A Day To Remember): I have two other best friends back home and it’s just stupid stuff that we come up with in our heads. We have a friend called Matt Gondek and he does everything, so yeah that’s it!

Shred: Matt from the US asks “You’ve probably been asked what your best tour line up would be but what would be your worst?” So for instance you might not like Miley Cyrus in which case you’d probably not want to tour with her. Who know’s maybe you do like her?I

Josh (A Day To Remember): I like Miley Cyrus!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I love her! She rides a Harley on stage!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Worst line-up that we can think of. It would probably be, I mean it would have to be somebody that we would just not be okay with.

Josh (A Day To Remember): Do we want to say that?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Like someone that hates us a lot?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Well no, I’m thinking outside of the box. Like for instance, I mean you hear rumors about stuff like this, we would love to go on tour with a band like Slipnot but I heard that their fans are not having it! So that would probably not be good, even though we would do it!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I would definitely do that.

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I heard the same thing about Slayer too, that would be pretty intimidating.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Yeah

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): We need somebody outrageous

Alex (A Day To Remember): (Enters the room) Insane clown posse!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): There you go! We couldn’t tour with ICP.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I would

Josh (A Day To Remember): I would too

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Again, we would try it out. (Everyone laughs)

Shred: Never say never!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): We might add elements of rap in our next CD

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I mean have you heard Danger?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Duh! Yeah!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): What’s up with that? Why do I rap in that song? Did anyone else notice that? Who the fuck was in the studio and was like ‘Yo, I really like that rapping part you did Jeremy’? How did that fly?

(Everyone laughs)

Kevin (A Day To Remember): It wasn’t me!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Why did I write that?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Maybe Chuck D was in the studio that day?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): What went through my head? (Everyone still laughing)

Josh (A Day To Remember): Matt Finch, the future rap producer!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I look back on writing that song and I literally think ‘How the hell did that happen?’

Kevin (A Day To Remember): That biscuit influence (Limp Bizkit)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): We would definitely go on tour with them

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Yeah

Shred: Lucy from the UK asks: “Can you do a British accent?”

Josh (A Day To Remember): (In possibly the funniest Brit accent we’ve ever heard) Of course I can! (Everybody breaks into laughter)

Shred: That’s actually probably one of the best we’ve heard so far!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): What?!

Shred: Most people say “‘Cor blimey guvnor” or something about a cup of tea.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): (In his very own British accent, reminiscent of ‘Oliver’) Can I have some more?

Alex (A Day To Remember): (Doing an impression of Paul Rudd) I’m from Landaaan

Josh (A Day To Remember): What is that from? Everyone keeps saying that?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Josh (A Day To Remember): Oh Yeah!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Come on! That’s your girl dude!

Josh (A Day To Remember): That is my girl!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Josh is now dating Kristin Bell

Alex (A Day To Remember): I’m dating the other girl in that movie. (Everyone laughs)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Oh yeah! I just forgot her name right now

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I don’t remember by girlfriends name but it’s cool!

Josh (A Day To Remember): Will you please post that?

Shred: Oh we will!

Josh (A Day To Remember): Josh is dating Kristin Bell

Shred: It’ll be breaking news

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Do it!

Josh (A Day To Remember): Do break that news!

Shred: It might start a rumor and then she might start to believe it

Kevin (A Day To Remember): That’s your exclusive that you came for!

Alex (A Day To Remember): What is her name? (Referring to Mila Kunis)

Josh: Mila Kunis!

Alex (A Day To Remember): Yeah! Say that Alex is dating Mila Kunis!

Shred: Fantastic, our very own exclusive!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): It’s unbelievable

Alex (A Day To Remember): And Josh dating Kristin Bell is? (Laughs)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): He is blonde!

Alex (A Day To Remember): I hate you guys! (Everyone laughs)

Josh (A Day To Remember): She doesn’t like monkeys

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): True

Kevin (A Day To Remember): That’s another exclusive right there!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Alex resembles Diddy Kong (Google it folks! 90’s Nintendo game)

Shred (A Day To Remember): We’re not going to say that we see that!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): You can! He looks just like him (laughs) can you please A/B that on the screen?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): And then A/B me with John Travolta (Head to the bottom of the page to see the pictures)*

Shred assistant: I was actually thinking that but didn’t want to say it!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Yes! (Starts to do an ‘I told you so’ dance)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Really?

Shred assistant: Yeah! I watched Pelham 123 the other night and Kevin reminds me of him (Travolta)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): No! I’ve met John Travolta and you don’t look like him!

Josh (A Day To Remember): Do you like my Queer hat? (Points to his baseball hat with a pineapple on the front)

(Everyone laughs)

Shred: I like it, It’s a pineapple!

Josh (A Day To Remember): We got 12 different hats yesterday given to us free and this is the one I chose

Shred: Do you like pineapples?

Josh (A Day To Remember): Yeah I like them. Actually I love pineapples.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Do you?

Josh (A Day To Remember): I love them.

Shred: Is it part of a clothing line of something?

Josh (A Day To Remember): I don’t think so. They’re just random hats!

Shred: Grace from the UK asks: “Homesick or Toursick? Which is worse and which do you feel the most?”

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): See here’s the thing.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): (Laughs) This is a touchy subject!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Here’s what is happening in my life right now: So, it gets to the point now where I go home and I’m there for a good week to two weeks, and if we have say a month off then the last two weeks I completely hate being home. I can not wait to be on tour again. Then, if you put me on tour I’ll go for a solid month before I get towards ‘Man I’d really like to be home chilling out right now’ So it’s pretty much…ruined my life!

Shred: Oh right! So is it the same for you two? (Kevin and Josh)

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I didn’t go home for nine months last year (Everyone starts laughing)

Shred: Really?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Yeah!

Josh (A Day To Remember): He’s from Minnesota, so we kind of held him captive, either on the road or in Florida.

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): He has no choice! You have to think of it like this – we’re from Florida and we always have to do something in between tours. If we only have two weeks off then you’re not going home.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I’m not going anywhere. So I just call the United States of America my home.

Shred: Jess from the US asks: “What do you think of Lady Gaga?”

Josh (A Day To Remember): Love her!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Loves it!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I’m indifferent.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Have you seen her new video? (Referring to the 9-minute video for ‘Telephone’ )

Shred: Yeah, it’s a bit mental!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Now, let me just say -

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Beyonce with bangs? That’s my girl! (Everyone laughs)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): – I really hate those style videos man! I just want to hear the song. I’d never heard the song before and I’m not trying to watch a movie, that’s not cool to me.

Kevin (A Day To Remember): You don’t want to see girls butts?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Well that’s cool (Everyone laughs) I’ve never seen one video like that where I’ve actually been ‘Man, that was sick!’. Thriller was sick but that’s it. That’s it! That’s where it end’s, done! (Kevin begins to re-enact thriller in his chair) Everybody else, you don’t get it!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): That’s because Thriller was done by John Landis.

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I don’t even care. (Laughs) I’m over it. I just want to hear the damn songs!

Shred: Well Jeremy has the final word there it seems!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Jeremy, would you let Peter Jackson (LOTR, King Kong) direct our next video?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Fuck yeah! (Everyone laughs)

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Lets just have a Lord of the rings video! Three hours long.

Josh (A Day To Remember): Did you hear that the dude that directed District 9 is doing that new Antwoord video? The South African rapper dude? The guy who did District 9 is directing his next video. That’s insane!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): If you saw this guy you’d be like ‘Really?’

Josh (A Day To Remember): I can’t even pronounce it. It’s like Die Antwoord

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Are you really plugging this guy right now?

Josh (A Day To Remember): Yes!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): It’s worth it

Josh (A Day To Remember): Ninja? What’s his song called?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Samurai?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): It’s Ninja something (Shred – Josh later showed us the video on Youtube and we found out that it was called ‘Enter The Ninja’)

Shred: And finally, Mike from the UK asks: “What plans do you have for 2010?”

Josh (A Day To Remember): Well Kevin is having a baby

Shred: Is that true? Or another joke?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Twins!

Shred: Really?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): No (Everyone laughs)

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Well like we said, we have the new record hopefully coming out this fall or winter. Hopefully!

Shred: Fantastic! And are you planning on returning to the UK at all this year?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): We’re actually coming back in like -

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Two months!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): - Yeah we’re doing a month of the festival circuit

Shred: Are you doing the Leeds and Reading festivals?

Josh (A Day To Remember): I don’t know. Are we doing Reading?

Kevin (A Day To Remember): That’s still up in the air

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Yeah. I mean, more than likely yes. Probably, we’ll see. We’re going to be doing a whole month of nothing but festival touring

Josh (A Day To Remember): Download festival is one hundred percent. It was decided yesterday

Kevin (A Day To Remember): That’s news to me!

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): So we’re on at download!

Shred: Who do you want to see while you’re at download? AC/DC perhaps?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Rage against the machine!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): Rage!

Shred: How about Them Crooked Vultures? Are you Dave Grohl fans?

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Uh, yeah!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I’m a Dave Grohl fan

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I heard that he’s on our stage too!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I think they sound a little (whistles)

Josh (A Day To Remember): I’ve never listened to them

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I’ve never listened to them but I don’t give a shit what they sound like, Dave Grohl is going to be on stage!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): I don’t even care because John-Paul Jones is also in that band

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): I didn’t know that

Kevin (A Day To Remember): The old bass player for Led Zepplin

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): What the fuck!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): And the singer from Queens of the Stone Age is in it

Jeremy (A Day To Remember): Bleh!

Kevin (A Day To Remember): (Laughs) Whatever!

Shred: Okay guys, well thank you very much for your answers!
