A Love Like Pi Interview

A Love Like Pi

Interview By: Craig Johnson

SHRED: Who are each of the members of the band and what do you each play?
Lief Liebmann:
Lief Liebmann: vocals, synthesizers, Collin Boyle: bass, Christopher LoPorto: guitar

SHRED: When and how did A Love Like Pi get started?
Lief: A Love Like Pi has existed in its current form for about 2 years, it
originally began as a movie-scoring effort but eventually took form as
a performance group.

SHRED: What made you choose A Love Like Pi as your band name?
Lief:
Pi is an irrational number, it goes on forever, and occupies this
obsessively mystical arena in the math world. Love is the same:
irrational and eternal. I like to think the band name also conjures up
two very contrasting ideas (pi and love) in the same way that I try to
blend musical styles that at first glance might seem to conflict with
one another.

SHRED: With so many different genres of music floating around, what genre
of music do you consider your band to be?

Lief: We are a rock-and-roll band.

SHRED: Do you have any major musical influences when it comes to the band?
Lief: I think individually, everyone in the band can attest to having many
different musical influences. However, the specific effects those
influences have on A Love Like Pi are difficult to pin-point.

SHRED: Does the band have someone specific who does most of the
songwriting or is it a group process?

Lief: I create the material; everyone wears it differently.

SHRED: You guys recently released your new album The Atlas and the Oyster,
how have things been going since the release?

Lief: The reaction has been unbelievable, it’s comforting to know that
people are still looking for effort and substance in their music.

SHRED: What is your favorite song off the record and why?
Lief: I personally love Honesty and Innocent Man, lyrically they stand out
as the most poignant songs to me.

SHRED: If you guys could tour with any three bands, who would they be and
why?

Lief: Brand New, Weezer, and Death Cab for Cutie. Tell me you wouldn’t want
to see that show.

SHRED: What is the craziest A Love Like Pi tour or show story?
Lief:
We have a knee-jerk reaction to show offers. The answer is always yes.
We’ve played more basements, greenhouses, garages, rehearsal spaces,
backyards, swimming pools, movie theatres, and bowling alleys than any
other band our age. We actually prefer them to venue shows, it makes
for a more volatile and exciting show-environment. Oh yeah, and there
was that time when Collin played with an IV in his arm the entire
show.

SHRED: What can we expect to see from A Love Like Pi this summer?
Lief:
We’re doing a full-US tour with Asteria in August and filming a video
out in LA with Robby Starbuck.

SHRED: Anything else you would like to add?
Lief:
Thanks a lot for your time, and don’t forget to support the music you
love.
