Since the age of two, Conor Oberst has been playing the piano, or at least attempting to. Oberst’s brother Matt, and his father, taught him how to play guitar when he was ten years old, and he has been writing ever since. Obviously, Oberst’s is more than just musically inclined. As soon as he came into the world, he basically began playing music.
After Oberst had first played in front of an audience, he was invited back to do so again, and it all continued on from there, as he continued to write and perform. He released his first debut album, Water, in 1993 on a cassette tape.
Oberst began playing music with some friends which turned into Normal Bailer, who then changed their name to The Faint. They released an album called Sine Sierra. His next musical project was Commander Venus, which formed in 1994. They released two albums, but as quickly as they got started, they fell apart. Many band members left to go to other music projects and bands, and then Commander Venus was no more.
That wasn’t going to stop Oberst from playing music. He was with The Magnetas for a very brief period of time. The band only released 3 songs, but in January 1996, Oberst began playing drums for a band called Park Ave. The band also came to an end when the singer and songwriter moved to London.
On of the most successful bands of Oberst’s career is Bright Eyes. He’s been on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and The Late Show With David Letterman. Bright Eyes is a very unique sound but Oberst’s lyrics and unique voice seem to catch everyone’s attention. Oberst also has a side project called Desaparecidos, where he plays guitar. This band is much different from Bright Eyes, lyrically and musically. He is currently known for Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band.
Oberst was named Songwriter of 2008 by The Rolling Stone. Oberst’s influences consist of Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Daniel Johnston, and Eliiot Smith. He is extremely talented, and has his very own style, with a Bob Dylan sound to his voice. No matter which group he is a part of, he always shows off his talent well.
