Interview With Alex Marshall Of The Cab

By: Kayley Guyette with Priscilla Basilio
Kayley Guyette: So how did The Cab get started?
Alex Marshall: The Cab was started by Singer DeLeon and Cash. They started playing acoustic. One day they were just playing in Cash’s room, throwing out band names. They were on bean bags actually, just chilling together. And they came up with The Cab. They filtered through members trying to find the right mix and we feel that we’ve reached the right mix. And we are The Cab.
Kayley Guyette: Have you always wanted to be a musician?
Alex Marshall: I started taking piano lessons when I was about five. I hated it, I hated all the classical music and that’s what I had to play. So I quit piano and started composing my own stuff. So I would say when I was around ten I had a very strong interest in music and I fell into this. Thank god.
Kayley Guyette: If you weren’t playing music, what do you think you’d be doing?
Alex Marshall: I played baseball all through high school. So I was going to go play baseball at the University Of Nevada. I was going to go pre-med. My dad’s a dentist, so I was going to take over his practice.
Kayley Guyette: You guys just released the Lady Luck EP, how was recoding it?
Alex Marshall: It was cool! The label gave us 100% freedom on it. Johnson came in, did his drums, Bryan came in did all of his guitar work. I got to just go in and do all the production, all the strings, all the piano and all that stuff. And Singer just came in and did all the vocals. And they just let us do it. We just sent them the finished songs and they were just like “Cool, sounds good”.
Kayley Guyette: Cassadee Pope from Hey Monday sings on the remix of “Take My Hand”, how’d she get involved?
Alex Marshall: Through our management, we’re all super close. A producer by the name of Machine did the remix and threw Cassadee in there. They basically just did the product and gave it to us. And we were like “wow, thanks for the remix”.
Priscilla Basilio: It works really well.
Alex Marshall: Thank you!
Kayley Guyette: You’re out on your first headlining tour, are you having fun?
Alex Marshall: We are! We’re playing really nice venues, like we are tonight, Showcase Live. It’s next to the Patriot Stadium, which is pretty cool. We’re being treated well, we got Oreos over there.
Priscilla Basilio: Peanut butter.
Alex Marshall: Peanut butter and Cool Ranch Doritos even though I can’t have those cause they’re dairy. The shows have been great; a lot of kids are coming out. Packed rooms, even if they’re a small room or a big room, they’ve been full. So we’ve been fortunate.
Kayley Guyette: You’re van got broken into the other night.
Alex Marshall: Yes and I was so bummed!
Kayley Guyette: Did much get taken?
Alex Marshall: We don’t know if it was left at the venue or if it was stolen when the van was broken into. But one of my guitars, the nicest guitar I have, is gone.
Priscilla Basilio: That sucks.
Alex Marshall: It’s a very soft spot, I don’t want to talk about it. It sucks.
Kayley Guyette: Do you have a favorite show on the tour so far?
Alex Marshall: Last night was definitely awesome. We played Highline Ballroom in New York City. Sold out, a ton of kids it was great. Great sound and it was just a fun set.
Kayley Guyette: Do you have a favorite part of being out on tour?
Alex Marshall: Every night, just playing the shows.
Kayley Guyette: Do you have any plans for after this tour?
Alex Marshall: After this tour, we are off. And we’re going to be writing and demo-ing. And then hopefully going into the studio to record our new CD.
Kayley Guyette: Could you share a fact about the band that isn’t common knowledge?
Alex Marshall: A fact about our band, can I use a life line?
Kayley Guyette: Of course.
Alex Marshall: What would be a fact about our band?
Bradley Lake: You have the best guitar tech.
Alex Marshall: We have the best and youngest guitar tech. And you can find him on Twitter @BradleyLake.
Kayley Guyette: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Alex Marshall: For the remaining shows on the tour, I hope you guys come out. Come party, it’ll be a fun time.
