The tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania has long been the home to groundbreaking acts and genre-defying bands. A by product of innovation is the inevitable need to re-focus; the point at which transformation has become stagnant and returning to old ways is necessary. As the pop punk sub genre continues to head more towards the pop sound than punk, one New Jersey band is taking their stance and focusing on the punk sound of the pop punk spectrum.

The Rocket Summer is the pop rock solo-project of artist Bryce Avary, whose roots are in Forth Worth, Texas. What makes The Rocket Summer unique, aside from intellectual lyrics and mature melodies, is the fact that Avary writes all the lyrics, plays all the instruments, and produces all the songs himself. This past October, The Rocket Summer released the You Gotta Believe EP, co-produced by CJ Eiriksson. Building off the buzz stemming from the EP, The Rocket Summer just released a full-length album Of Men and Angels on February 23rd. This album has been highly anticipated for dedicated fans as well as pop-rock lovers of all types

From Boston, MA comes the band Rescue Aurora; a band that brings the most refreshing female vocals since Hayley Williams and a powerful alternative rock sound, rivaling that of VersaEmerge, to back it up. This five-piece band is fronted by Brittany Flynn (vocals) with support from Cooper Heinrichs (guitar, backup vocals), John Boles (guitar, backup vocals), Lauren Baker (bass), and Jesse Hangen (drums). As electro-rock bands are taking the music industry by storm, underground dance clubs are starting to acknowledge their importance to the electronic scene. In cities all across the U.S, there are indie/electro nights popping up at major nightclubs and concert venues. Unknown to many are the true broad classifications of dance music: house, techno, trance, electronic, and mash-up. Currently in the city of Boston, there is one DJ who is climbing to the top of the underground eletro-rock dance scene, Taylor Walker.

Forget everything you thought you knew about the mid 1960’s to early 1970’s. Forget what you thought you learned from the Beatles inspired Across the Universe, and don’t even consider the philosophical beliefs you obtained from Almost Famous. If you think Freddie Mercury was flashy, think again. The band of Montreal out does all of those artistic sources with a touch of elegant flamboyancy that is undeniably inspiring. of Montreal played at Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA on January 27th and delivered the most dynamic live set I have ever seen.

It has been a while since the rock scene has heard a group as true to its roots as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as groove oriented as Incubus, or as lyrically driven as Dave Mathews Band. However, all that changed with the arrival of Cure for Static a four-piece alternative rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. Cure for Static is a band that combines the groove-rock sound with singer/songwriter elements while avoiding sounding specifically similar to any of the previously mentioned bands.

Currently, the alternative rock genre is splintered into tiny subgenres that are quickly becoming oversaturated with identical talent as original as their matching vests and deep v-neck t-shirts. However, despite the state of the current music industry, there is a band that stands out due to their ability to blend distinct sounds from various subgenres into a mature sound. Every You, a four-piece rock band from Davie, Florida, has blended the sound of pop rock with the vocals of progressive rock to create a truly unique sound.

Farewell Fighter in a power pop, rock group from Nashville, TN who knows how to infuse the proper level of synth and rock to create a sound that holds its own in an over saturated genre. The band is composed of Kenny Fleetwood (vocals, guitar), Lee Morton (guitar, vocals), Preston Jackson (bass), and Matt Hooper (drums). Although The Winning Team is not exactly a stand out album, it holds promise for the young band and showcases their talent in a positive light.

On January 11, 2010 Steph Mirsky down with the guys from Parachute at the World Café in Philadelphia, PA I had the opportunity to talk to them about their past musical endeavors, their new found success, and what is up for the band in the future. I must say that they were some of the most laid back and generally fun musicians I have the pleasure of interviewing thus far.
