It’s no surprise that Anais Mitchell is able to stand out among the vast sea of singer/songwriters. Since her humble beginnings in the farmlands of Addison County, Virginia, she has gained a modest but dedicated following who admire the passion and sincerity in her folk songs. She was signed to Waterbug Records until 2007, when she signed with Ani DiFranco’s label called Righteous Babe Records.
Mitchell’s songs are the perfect combination of quiet emotion and intriguing storytelling. Her vocals are unique to say the least; the youthfulness of her voice is in stark contrast to the wisdom of her words. Her guitar picking is simple and poignant, which complements her elegant, poetic lyrics. The meanings of her songs are not as elusive as her contemporaries like Damien Rice, which is refreshing and makes her music that much more tangible.
Mitchell delivers a captivating live performance. Her grace and intoxicating presence enhances her guitar playing and expressive singing perfectly. In fact, her live performance is what convinced singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco to sign her to Righteous Babe Records.
In 2006, Mitchell started the ambitious, collaborative project called Hadestown, a “folk opera” about the Greek story of Orpheus and Eurydice set in post-apocalyptic Depression-era America. The opera includes the vocals of fellow musicians Bon Iver and Ani DiFranco.
The artistry and integrity of Anais Mitchell’s work is impossible to overlook. Even if you can’t appreciate her dynamic writing style, her flawless performances and earnest vocals are sure to win you over.
