Formed in 2000, Brand New became one of the newest and biggest bands in the music industry. The band consists of lead singer and guitarist, Jesse Lacey, guitarist Vincent Accardi, guitarist and keyboardist Derrick Sherman, bassist Garrett Tierney and drummer Brian Lane. So far Brand New has release four albums, Your Favorite Weapon in 2001, Deja Entendu in 2003, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me in 2006, and their newest release Daisy on September 22, 2009.
After twelve months of recording, several different release due dates, and even an album name change, Brand New released Daisy on Interscope Records. The album seems to tell a story with closing and ending music from the track “On Life’s Highway” by Bertrand Brown.
“Vices” begins with the olden track, and then gets into completely hard riffs that bring a new sound of Brand New to the table. The song is provoking and chaotic. The fifth track “You Stole” is so serene. It’s slow and the guitar implicates somewhat of an oceanic noise.
“Be Gone” is the epitome of unique. The vocals are distorted in a rough way and the southern, cowboyesque noise is so cool. “At The Bottom” is another brand new noise for the band. It’s an easy crowd pleaser that would make any venue sing in harmony.
“Gasoline” is the perfect song. The drums ignite a very dramatic sound to it. The guitar builds up anticipation with its wailing and the vocals invite a flaming sound. “Bed” is much more mellow, with lyrics that flow around a beautiful bass line. Although it is not my favorite song, the transition to a harder “Vices” to a softer Bed is unique.
“Sink” is probably the only track that reminds me of older Brand New tracks. Its electronic feel towards the mid of the song makes it “brand new” though. “Noro” is my all time favorite song off of the album. It has such a beautiful lyric form, and it was ideal for the ending song off of the album. It’s quiet beginning and then it picks up the pace which is amazing.
Overall, the album was perfectly executed and the new format of their songs flow flawlessly.
