New Zealand based singing and song writing duo and traveling comedy act Flight of the Conchords released I Told You I Was Freaky, their latest collection of comedic melodies on Oct. 20th. The group is also popular for their self titled HBO series, which chronicles the lives of the two struggling musicians Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, their obsessively devoted fan Mel (played by Kristen Schaal), and their lovably inept booking agent Murray, played by Rhys Darby.
Focusing mostly on the antics depicted by the lyrics more than the music, I Told You I was Freaky contains mostly hip-hop and R&B influences to accompany the shamelessly rambling raps including anecdotes of falling in love with a girl who they just met in the park in We’re Both In Love With A Sexy Lady, true stories about hurt feelings (yes, rappers have feelings too) in Hurt Feelings, and the irresistible urge of women to check out Bret and Jemaine’s sweet “Sugalumps”.
Title track I Told You I Was Freaky goes through all of the scandalous, and shockingly absurd sexual propositions they can think of to entice a woman, while Rambling Through The Avenues of Time begins as a folky Billy Joel influenced tune in which Bret recalls a long lost love story “as real as the wind”, with Jemaine interjecting to show his skepticism only to reveal at the end that the story was mostly fictional.
Perhaps the most immediately clever song out of this collection is the astutely observed dance club jam, Too Many Dicks [On The Dance Floor] which exposes the disappointment of showing up to party where not nearly enough women are in attendance and the dance floor is crowded with men.
Overall I Told You I Was Freaky is a solid follow-up to 2008’s self titled effort, delivering consistent laughs in a fun and catchy musical package overflowing with the outrageous personalities of Bret and Jemaine.
