Flogging Molly Show Review

The light dimmed and a silence infected the room. Cheers erupted from the crowd while seven painfully talented people glided onto an empty stage. Ears stood alert as the sweet melody of an Irish accent swept across the speakers. Tonight was a night of music and celebration. Tonight was a night to rock.

Flogging Molly commanded the stage brilliantly as their first song “Paddy’s Lament” kicked in. The Fillmore in Detroit, MI was about to explode from excitement. The place was packed and everyone there was ready for a good show.  As the band continued to breeze through their set, jumping around onstage and dancing like maniacs they stopped to thank their fans for coming to the show, and gave them a little update of Irish news.

About halfway through the set, they started performing their songs acoustic, something that they had never done before on a tour. “The Wanderlust” was the first song they played acoustic and it sounded wonderful. They played a few more songs acoustic including “Factory Girls”, “Punch Drunk Grinning Soul”, and “Float”.

The band continued their set with songs such as “Tobacco Island”, “Rebels of the Scared Heart”, and “Devils Dance Floor”.  Knowing that the show was coming to a close, the band gave it all they could, pulling out all the stops.  Lead singer Dave King even switched in his guitar for a bodhrán at one point in the show, where Bridget Regan switched between the fiddle and the tin whistle.

As the lights turned back on and the concertgoers were expected to leave, they started chanting for the band to come back on stage. Dave King strutted onto the stage, a guitar his only companion as he started playing “The Wrong Company”. The rest of the band came back on stage and had a smooth transition into “Black Friday Rule”. The band played one final song, “Seven Deadly Sins”. As the last note echoed through the building, cries of happy fans met the band as they walked off stage.
