The Fall of Troy In The Unlikely Event Album Review

By: Ashley Pagano

From Mukilteo, Washington comes a three-piece progressive hardcore rock band consisting of band members Thomas Erak (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Andrew Forsman (drums), and Frank “Black” Ene (bass and backup vocals). Who is this screaming rock band you ask? Well, none other than The Fall Of Troy of course.  Album after album, this band proves to be full of talent and incredibly strong musicians. Their newest album, In The Unlikely Event, is another masterpiece that shows off the obvious talent the band has, and the remarkable sound they have produced, yet again.

In The Unlikely Event definitely is a new musical direction for the band. The band’s signature intense sound is still there, but it stands out from the previous work of The Fall OF Troy. This album became a quick addiction for me as soon as I had heard the first track. “Panic Attack” started off with amazing guitar effects, and a screaming that almost fronted as chilling.  This track was a great way for the band to introduce the tone of the album, and prepare listeners for what the rest of what the CD has to offer. For example, the very next track, “Straight-Jacket Keelhauled,” is one of my favorites on the album. Right from the beginning, the crazy drum beats partnered with shrills and screams intensify the whole feel.

I was quickly reminded of “F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X” when I heard the song, “Single” because of the guitar in the beginning.  The lyrics stood out in this song to me, more than the others on the album.  This song is a song about being upset, and heartbroken, but it does not embody an air of depression that many artists would use to convey their emotions.  Never once is slower or softer music employed, showing The Fall of Troy’s ability to convey passion with a harsh and extreme sound.  This theme of continues in the song “Empty The Clip, The King Has Been Slain, Long Live The Queen” as well.  Along with the remarkable melody that this song has, it seems to lyrically be along the same lines as “Single,” partnering energy with emotion to demonstrate the presence of both.

On In The Unlikely Event, Fall Of Troy definitely focused on the lead guitar. “Dirty Pillow Talk” is the perfect example of this. The song’s guitar, drums, and vocals all fit together beautifully, creating one of, what I would say to be, the best tracks on the album.  The guitar playing is quick, and obviously not the simplest melody to play, but it is flawless.  The screaming adds so much emotion, but on this track FOT experimented with melodic emotion as well.  Halfway through the song, the lyrics quickly stop, followed by a breakdown of the drums and guitar. Contrary to the melodic aspects of intense interlude, “Webs” is a song where the guitar is slightly slower and naturally more expressive.

If you see this album, your best bet would be to buy it, because you will not regret it. If you want to hear if for yourself live, check out the band, which is currently on tour with Thursday promoting their impressive and brilliant album themselves.
