Go Periscope Self Titled CD Review

By Ashley Pagano

Seattle band Go Periscope formed back in 2008, bursting onto the scene to showcase their original synthesized melodies and beats. The duo, made up of Florin Mehedinti and Joshua Frazier, have been playing instruments since they were young, and as they got older, just kept getting better! Their new self titled CD definitely has select songs that really does the band justice, and shows what they’re all about.

Take It Personal” gets the album rolling. It’s got what any song needs to catch anyone’s attention. Catchy melody, lyrics that hold your attention and a good beat. It has all the pieces a good song needs. It continues on in “Crush Me” Florin has a wide range, and the vocals are perfection. With the synthesized sound, and awesome effects, this song lures you right in.

Breathe Deception” is my personal favorite. If you’ve ever head “Kelsey” by Metro Station, and liked it, this is the perfect song for you. This song is beautifully written and recorded, and has a fascinating sound. “Rollin’ With The Dead” was a little different than the rest of the songs. Sure, it still had the same synthesized sound but it wasn’t a favorite of mine. It sounds like I’ve heard it before, because it’s so much like a lot of other songs out there.

Beautiful Synthetic” brings it all back though. It’s another cute love song, but it has a nice sound to it. It’s a little repetitive, but the melody is catchy, and the lyrics are relatable. “Chick Flick Tears” it a slower song, but to be honest, it’s a little boring. The album starts off great, but there aren’t enough change ups in the album to hold my attention. The lyrics don’t really seem to make much sense either.

Escape The Season” sounds like a song that would be in a movie at the beginning, but when the vocals come in, I’m suddenly uninterested. Unfortunately I think this album took a turn for the worst somewhere in the middle. They all sound the same toward the end, and it’s easy to lose interest. “In My Head” stands out a little more, but again, there is nothing really notable about the song. I really liked the first few songs, but was disappointed in the end. The band has a great sound, and definitely the talent, but still has a ways to go.
