There was a time that acoustic rock was everyone’s anthem for the early spring and summer months. There was a time when the pain struck chords of Dashboard Confessional and Ace Enders rang loud within us all. But the strong sound quickly faded and gave way to the ukulele infused, The Beatles inspired sound of acts such as NeverShoutNever and Plug In Stereo. Change is not necessarily bad, in fact the previously mentioned bands have paved the way for an entire new sub genre, but as the industry becomes saturated with copycat bands it is refreshing to see a few artists returning to the earlier rock sound. Great Big Planes, hailing from the town of Toms River, NJ, has brought back the rock to acoustic rock.
Josh Moran is the front man for Great Big Planes and his impressive vocals produce a remarkably mature sound. Patrick Campion (lead guitar) and Chad Sabo (bass, vocals) back Moran and provide a full rock sound that takes each song to a level of melodic success not heard from this genre in a long time. GBP is a strong band that deserves every bit of success they have already achieved. Playing their first live set in November of 2009, GBP have achieved rapid success in a short period of time. The band works with The Working Group Artist Management and is willingly not signed to any label; demonstrating the direction future bands can possibly choose and still gain recognition and achieve success.
In the short period of time the band has been together, they have already toured nationally, posted impressive numbers on MySpace, and released an EP. This hard work and dedication to music has translated into a strong career path for the band. Great Big Planes is slotted to play at South by Southwest in Austin Texas on March 18th, which is followed by opening for Stereo Skyline on a national tour for the duration of March and April. The band however has no plans to slow down; they are playing The Bamboozle Road Show for its entirety during May and June. With all this national exposure, it will come as no surprise if Great Big Planes starts to get some great big exposure. So go check out their MySpace and see them on tour and experience a refreshing sound that will surely shake off those winter blues.
