Interview With Cam Muncey Of Jet

Kayley Guyette: You’re out on tour how’s it going?

Cam Muncey: We just preformed at the Olympics a couple of days ago then came back to LA. So we’ve just kind of been hanging out, kind of a slow start to the tour. So we are on tour, we’re on the road.

Guyette: On the topic of the Olympics, how was performing there?

Muncey: It was great. There was a special kind of feeling going on for everyone in Vancouver. I was pretty happy to be there. It was fun, it was just kind of constantly raining on us. There was a definite chance of electrocution. But we were lucky.

Guyette: Your album, Shaka Rock, come out this past summer, how was recording it?

Muncey: It was good. We did it in Austin. It was nice to spend all day in the studio then just go out in Austin. Everything’s outside and it really suited us. We liked the place and the people.

Guyette: How does Shaka Rock differ from your earlier albums?

Muncey: Well we produced the album ourselves. It just shows that we’ve tried to get back to basics. By doing it ourselves, we didn’t have to over think stuff. It has more of a rock and roll mentality to it, it’s not too overcooked.

Guyette: Do you think you’d self produce more albums in the future?

Muncey: I think so, yeah. I was just talking to our drummer, Chris, the other day. That we should just go self produce again and go somewhere really cool.  Just go somewhere that inspires us and make the music. Let it play out. Some people can just be too analytical about it, you know?

Guyette: Do you have a favorite track off the album?

Muncey: There’s one, that I think will be one of the next singles, called ‘Seventeen’ that we were quite happy with how it turned out. It’s one of our sort of big melancholy songs. It’s a melancholy rock song. I like that one, it was fun to write. When we wrote it, it was an incredible experience. There are good things associated with that song, in my mind.

Guyette: Besides ‘Seventeen’ do you have plans for any other singles at the moment?

Muncey: I think there will be a couple more singles this year. But I can’t even think what the next one will be. You just kind of think about the one you’re doing at that moment and see what happens. It will be all rock songs, though ‘Seventeen’s got a bit of a pop edge to it.

Guyette: What can Jet fans expect from you guys in the coming months?

Muncey: We’re thinking about videos and things like that. Thinking up some new ideas to do and getting this tour done. In the summer we’re probably be going to Europe. Head down to the southern hemisphere, go to Australia and Japan again. Our minds are just kind of set on the road ahead. Maybe write some more music again. Keep ourselves busy.

Guyette: Would you mind sharing a little known fact about yourself or the band? Something that makes you guys unique from the other bands out there?

Muncey: We live all over the world, we all live in different places. Chris lives in LA, Nick spends half his time in Italy, Marks in Melbourne, I live in London. We can’t stand each other, so we all have to live halfway around the world [laughter].

Guyette: Does it make it hard for you guys to record since you all live all over?

Muncey: It does actually. I think the for next one, we’ll all just sort of go somewhere and bring our wives and girlfriends. Then just live and record there. When we recorded in Austin, we all sort of lived away from our homes. We probably won’t be doing that any more.  I’d like to be able to be off with my wife.  To be able to come home in the nighttime and not sleep alone. In the future, it’ll just be better to move our wives around with the band. As opposed to being away, being a bachelor for three months or however long it takes to record an album.

Guyette: Well that’s all the questions I have, is there anything else you’d like to add?

Muncey: We’re looking forward to being in Boston, we haven’t been there in awhile. It’s cool being in a big music town. We always have a good show there, so I’m looking forward to coming out. Should be good.
