Ke$ha Animal CD Review

by Jay Rowland

Ke$ha seems to be pulling off (for the most part) what the Millionaires failed miserably at. She has come up with a decent ‘party for the sake of partying’ sound and still retained some credibility. This girl seems to have as many haters as she has followers. Whether you like her or not, for now she is here and has just released her first full length album, Animal on RCA. This new album from Ke$ha blends together a dance and rap sound with the story telling style of country music lyrics.

The album opens up with Your Love Is My Drug. The song borders on a mix of slower pop and dance/hip hop sound. Even though the song is some what annoying it still forces you to bop your head to the beat. A song like this can be bad or good depending on the mood you are in. Your Love Is My Drug melts decently into the first single, Tik Tok. This song is a really catchy dance song that seems made for the club scene. It captures the essence of what Ke$ha is all about, and that’s just having a good time. Even though the lyrics on this song are some what lacking it’s too catchy to be ignored if you are any sort of fan of this style of music.

The song Kiss N Tell has lyrics that really fall short of the mark. The fact that this whole album is just having fun makes up for it some what but not completely. The sound reminds me of some older 90s dance sounds. The music is decent, but really the lyrics instantly grate against the ears. The song, Stephen is fine if it was just a gossip story but that’s where it stops. As a song it fails. The lyrics and the music grate on the senses. After hurting our ears with the last two songs Ke$ha turns around and apologizes with the song, Blah Blah ft 3OH3! This song goes back to the ‘made for the clubs’ sound and even though the lyrics are some what lacking, she again hits the mark with the catchy beat. The fact that 3OH3! join her on this song probably has a lot to do with how much better this song is then the last two songs.

The song, Dinosaur is very childish despite the topic. However, the beat is very catchy and would defiantly appeal to some one that had been in the situation of having an old guy hit on them. The style sounds like its trying to emulate the sound that GwenStefani made so popular with her solo albums but Ke$ha falls short. The song Boots And Boys really draw attention to the underlying country style of the lyrics. This song seems to mesh dance, country, and electronica all into one song. Keeping in mind what a party album this is the song Boots And Boys hits the mark in that area. The album closes with the title track, Animal. With this song Ke$ha slows it down to a totally different style of music. This song style almost resembles Lights in musical sound. It’s a nice song that proves that no matter what else is on the album this girl really does have talent and shouldn’t be ignored.

After listening to this album with a review in mind I now realize why Ke$ha has such a large mess of followers and haters. Some of the album is a great mix of party songs, but some of the songs really miss the mark. I find myself coming away with a love/hate relationship so to speak. If nothing else though you should give the whole album a listen and pick and choose what you want for yourIPod.
