Out of the mass of musical artists crowding the Los Angeles scene, came an indie electro-pop group titled Uh Huh Her. The group formed in January of 2007, when acquaintances Camila Grey (Lead Vocals/Synth/Bass/Guitar) and Leisha Hailey (Vocals/Synth/Bass) came together and started experimenting with different musical directions. The timing was perfect for both, Grey was phasing out of her previous group and Hailey was coming off filming a season for the hit television series “The L Word.” Both women have deep roots in the music industry: Hailey formerly played for the bands The Murmurs and Gush, and Grey a former member of the lo-fi rock band Mellowdrone. The suggestive band name originates from an album title by artist PJ Harvey.
What sets Uh Huh Her apart is not their exceedingly loyal fan base or the dynamic contract between the two front women; it is their ability to create innovative indie electro-pop that touches the hearts of listeners while simultaneously providing an uplifting beat. UHH self-produced their first EP titled I See Red, which was performed live with no backing band, only the help of Hailey’s iPod and the pre-recorded tracks. The EP was so well received that Grey and Hailey were able to play sold-out shows from Los Angeles to London, maintaining and building a huge and loyal fan base throughout the process.
The duo followed the success of I See Red with a full-length album only six months later in 2008. Full-length, Common Reaction was produced by Al Clay (Pixies, Blur, Pink), who helped UHH achieve a previously undiscovered level of clarity and quality. Although the actual recording of the album was fragmented and the girls wrote songs separately, the flow of the album is seamless. This ability to create well-crafted, lyrically mature music is what will carry UHH to the front of the music scene.
In the end, it would seem that Grey and Hailey are taking indie and giving it a little touch of glam, in a sort of partnering skinny jeans with stilettos kind of way. These two women will surely make way in their respective music scene with their upcoming second full-length album. With the expectation of true innovation and even more dynamic electro-indie rock, Uh Huh Her will most definitely step their sound up to the next level and make their beats as suggestive as their name. So if you want a nice switch from the electro-power pop of the alternative scene, check out Uh Huh Her for a more developed sound.
