In 2002 we were given an introduction to a band that would really take the alternative rock music scene by storm; this introduction was titled I Am The Movie. This band even further astounded us in 2005 with a release called Commit This To Memory. This release would create a gigantic fan base and introduce us to songs that would soon become songs people would say were their biggest hits as a band. Then in 2007 came Even If It Kills Me, which in my opinion spilt the fan base down the middle. Where a lot of fans felt like the sound of the band changed dramatically with that album, a lot of fans really enjoyed the matured sound of what the band took time to make. The band responsible for this back story? Motion City Soundtrack.
Now we’re in 2010, three years after that release. What could we expect? A matured sound like Even If It Kills Me? An taste of older stuff like I Am The Movie? It was very much a surprise to everyone due to that the Motion City Soundtrack isn’t the most predicable band. As the singles started coming out I made sure to hear each one as they came out. The first song off the album to be heard was Disappear. After hearing this song I felt like I could expect a record with a little bit of a type of vibe I got from Commit This To Memory. I was so excited for this release once I heard that track. Next Her Words Destroyed My Planet and A Lifeless Ordinary (A Little Help) came out and set me back a little. Where I thought I knew what to expect, Motion City threw me for a loop. Where I loved both songs, I felt like they gave more of a sound from Even If It Kills Me. With that feeling I didn’t have any idea what to expect.
Then the time came, the album was put up for stream on MySpace. As I listened to the tracks over and over I felt very strongly in saying that this record has a lot of things I loved about all the previous records. The album starts out with Worker Bee, which isn’t my favorite song off the record, but I feel like it starts it off at a good fast pace. Then the album I feel like goes toward a Even If It Kills sound with A Lifeless Ordinary and Her Words. Then with Disappear comes in with a heavier sound and some extremely catchy lines making it in my opinion on of the best songs on the record. It’s then followed by another of my favorite songs, Delirium. This song is just straight up catchy Motion City lyrical genius.
Then as the album the halfway point at track six we get History Lesson. This track is probably my least favorite on the record. I wouldn’t say it’s a weak song, I just really enjoy the entire record and I find this song a little bit weaker than the others. Both History Lesson and Stand Too Close bring a softer sound to the record which is a good break from some of the heavier songs the preceded them. Pulp Fiction and @!#?@! are some more of my favorite songs on this album because of their such well written lyrics. Skin And Bones and The Weakends come in as the album starts winding down to a close. They aren’t anything to skip over though! Skin And Bones is a little softer while The Weakends is a simply amazing song. It’s lyrics and message are just a really great way to end the record.
So in conclusion I feel like this album was definitely worth the wait it took for us to get new MCS. This record is one I’ll have on repeat for a very long time, and while I can’t say it’s going to get a perfect score, I’m giving it a 9 out of 10 as I was very pleased with the album as a whole.
