Jay Shred News Staff Top Ten Albums Of 2009: Jay

Jay Rowland is a photographer who found his way to Shred News in late summer 2009. He began writing for Shred News as well as for his college newspaper. He regularly heads out to shows to interview acts that Shred may not have taken a notice in if it wasn’t for him (like Emilie Autumn). He also regularly does all offered press to him, sometimes he has to be told he has too much on his plate. Jay’s the oldest member of the staff, but don’t let that fool you he likes a lot of the same music everyone on staff likes. And his musical taste has rubbed off on his kids who love Lights.

Paramore – Brand New Eyes
Paramore really let loose with this album and let the world know that they are here to stay. This album shows how much they have grown as a band. This album has won Paramore a spot in music history.

LIGHTS – The Listening
This girl has lit up the hearts of fans all around the world with her uplifting songs and constant smile. LIGHTS much anticipated debut full length album was all her fans had hoped for and more. The album simply brings a smile to your face even if don’t want to smile. Check out the songs, Savior, Ice, and Alliance.

The Swellers – Ups And Downsizing
This album is counted among the top favorites of many punk rock fans. Hailing from my home town of Flint, MI, they bring a message of hope to the world. The album is full of a sound that is almost dead in this day and age.  It’s no surprise that these guys have gained so many fans over 2009 with their great punk rock sound. With this album they truly have perfected their melodic punk sound.

VersaEmerge – Self Titled EP
Simply, one of my favorite bands from 2009’s Warp Tour. This EP is full of an epic sound that can not be ignored. Sierra amazes me every time I listen to this EP that such an overwhelming voice can come from such a small girl. Take a listen and get won over by this well rounded band.

Green Day – 21st Century Break Down
Although not my favorite album from this legendary band it still can not be left off a top ten list in my books. This band has inspired so many people and they continue to do it for a new generation with the release of their newest album. Though their sound has changed some over the years they have still kept that hard edge that has made them what they are; one of the greatest punk bands in the world. This album is the natural progression of growing up. Gone are the lyrics full of getting high and playing with themselves. This album speaks out to America that any one can make a change, they just have to get out there and do it.

A Letter To You – Aimless
This Lansing, MI band does nothing but amaze with their newest EP. The lyrics and music seem far behind their years and hint at more greatness to come from this band. If you haven’t done it yet, make sure to download the EP from iTunes and give them a listen. You’ll be glad you did.

1997 – Notes From Underground
This band is simply amazing in their range of talent and the newest album is no exception. This album has a great mix of sounds on it. This album is great to put in your collection for those times you want to slow down, but still enjoy the music. The album is full of ballads and haunting music that fits almost any music fans collection.

This Time Next Year – Road Maps And Heart Attacks
This one has spent a lot of time in my CD player. It’s a great driving album and the fact that the band offers it up as a free download makes it a “can’t lose” choice for 2009. If you are a fan of The Swellers pick this up and take a listen. They too have captured that punk sound that goes against the normal sound of today’s popular sound.

Rise Against – Appeal To Reason
The fact that this band reminds me of The Offspring is a big plus in their favor. Even though they constantly remind me of The Offspring they still have a sound of their own. The radio single, Savior gives fans enough of a reason to buy the album and the rest of the songs are simply bonus. If you haven’t bought this album yet I suggest you do.

Patent Pending – Attack Of The Awesome
This underappreciated band’s newest album truly is awesome. Another album that can give us hopes that punk hasn’t completely died. Song’s like She’s Anti Everything seem to be written just for their fans to scream along with them at the top of their lungs.
