Shred News Writers’ Top Five Songs
After having fun writing the collaboration bit for Warped Tour 2009, it was decided that we would do monthly collaboartion articles. These articles can be and will be on anything random, but music related we think up. The collaboration articles will run monthly. This month’s topic is top five favorite songs currently.
Bekka Collins:
“Back to the Start” -Lily Allen : I personally feel as though this is one of her strongest songs on her whole album because of the catchy pop like beat which is maintained throughout and the sing a long chorus. You can’t help but tap your feet.
“Forever And Always” -Taylor Swift : One of the most overlooked songs on Fearless. People are too quick to jump into why Taylor wrote this song but infect it is a very relatable song all round concentrating on the theme of love but also trust. Her lyrics speak for themselves and its one of my all time favorites.
“Consider The Sea”- VersaEmerge : Perfection. The mix between the drums and the guitar riffs along with Sierras vocals all fit perfectly together. My favorite Versa song and i can’t wait to hear the new stuff.
“Let The Flames Begin”-Paramore: When they perform this live with the intro and outro their energy level is so high and you can see the passion all the members of Paramore have for music. The meaning behind this song is so true about keeping faith and I think you can relate to it whether you are religious or not.
“Ashley”-Escape The Fate : On a whole this song is fantastic. The drums the riffs the vocals all great but the chorus makes this song for me. It contains so much raw energy you just want to scream it out and it’s a real crowd pleaser.
Emily Kaufman:
“Weightless”- All Time Low. Ever since the band released the song on March 24th, 2009, the song has been in consistent rotation on my iPod. The song has great meaning in my life and helps me realize that things are going to get better with time. I’m going into my senior year of high school, but people constantly confuse me for someone eighteen or nineteen years old. Being more mature in a place where immaturity is so common makes it a hard environment to deal with on a daily basis. I have goals that I want to achieve and I feel like I’m wasting my days in a classroom instead of living out my dreams. “I’m so sick of watching all the minutes pass as I go no where/And this is my reaction to everything I fear/Cause I’ve been going crazy/I don’t wanna waste another minute here.”
“How You Love Me Now”- Hey Monday. Not only is this song catchy, but it speaks of a situation I’ve dealt with in the past. The song is about being “the other girl” in a guy’s like becoming “the girl” after it’s too late. By that time you’re fed up with the lies and the “please just take me backs”. The song is saying, I gave you a chance but you screwed it up, how can you [all of a sudden] love me now?
“Don’t Stop Believin’”- Journey. Anytime I need to belt out a song that’s uplifting and free spirited, I turn on this song and sing along. After seeing them perform at Bamboozle, I just love this song even more.
“Open Happiness”- Brendon Urie, Cee-Lo Green, Janelle Monae, Patrick Stump & Travis McCoy. This song has such a great, positive message. Whenever I’m feeling down, I’ll turn on this song and realize that everything’s not so bad. The song features a bunch of great artists, and was produced by the amazing Butch Walker.
“Timing Is Everything”- Our Last Night. This lyrics of this song could be taken so many different ways. From a love song to just an overall inspirational song, it bears meaning. To me, the lines “Make me believe/And give me a taste of what this could be/Make me believe/And trust me/We’ll be there soon” are about working together through the hard times in order to make it to the good.
Kayley Guyette:
“Saying Goodbye”-New Years Day. This song has over 300 plays on my iTunes. Towards the end of the year I spent at the University Of New Haven, I grew sick of nearly everyone there. The people I started the year off acted just like chameleons and pretended to be something their not. When it came time for move out day, just like the song I made my final exit. I’ll never go back there. This song was my soundtrack to leaving.
“Hug Me”-Meg&Dia. I first saw them on the Take Action Tour and I really liked them. I bought their newest CD once it came out. Hug Me is one of the songs that stands out on the album. The song is about growing up and finding your place in the world even if it means changing your name. The song starts off with the girl in the story feeling comfortable with the guy she’s with and by the end of the song realizing she doesn’t really like him, so she moves on. The song is something you can relate to.
“Give Me A Reason”-The Corrs. This song is an all time favorite of mine. I listen to it when I’m stressed out or upset and feel like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. For me the song is about feeling weak, defenseless and lost. It’s about being broken hearted and looking for someone to give you a reason to carry on.
“Stuttering”-The Friday Night Boys. This song is witty and everyone can relate to it. It’s about being nervous to talk to a boy/girl and stuttering when you finally work up the nerve to talk to them. For me the song also holds a funny meaning, when I interviewed the band and asked about the song, I ended up stuttering. So whenever I listen to the song I always laugh at how I gracefully recovered from stuttering.
“Clocks”-VersaEmerge. The first time I listening to this song all the way through I got chills and it was the same way the first time I saw it live. Sierra’s voice is so powerful yet beautiful in it. The guitars on it are fantastic. The entire song is beautiful and meaningful.
Nicole Bradley:
Underoath – Emergency Broadcast :: The End is Near. This song clearly demonstrates how we as humans are basically the cancer to this Earth. How we have polluted every last ounce of air, and degraded the Earth’s face to a weave of metal and structure. With powerful lyrics such as “”. This song makes the listener really think about how we as people are disgusting and how we could change these habits, and for that, this is one of my top songs.
Mute Math – Backfire. This song is seriously one of the coolest sounding songs I’ve heard. The way that the singer, Paul Meany can transition his voice to a pop-sound to a suave sound is amazing. On top of that the instrumentals’ have such a great electronic, but more alternative sound to them.
Radiohead – 15 Step. Although most listeners will know this song from the end of the Twilight soundtrack, this song actually belongs in a special place in my heart. If you just listen to the amazing beat of this song, you’ll love it as much as I do. It’s about being let down in life, and the lyrics are used perfectly.
Silversun Pickups – Substitution. This song is basically to get back at people who have put you up for substitution in your life. The lyrics basically tell you to stand up for yourself, and throw the stones back at the people who put you down before. Plus on top of this great message, its also a good song to groove to.
Family Force 5 – Love Addict. This song has literally been one of my favorite songs since freshman year of high school which was four years ago. My friend and I would jam to this song everyday before school started, and because of it we grew so much closer. The lyrics are fun, upbeat and overall a good song to dance to. Family Force 5 brings complete and utter energy to every song they perform, this one included.
