State Radio: Let It Go Release Party

By Johnny Drybanski

On Tuesday, September 29th, local Boston band State Radio celebrated the release of their 3rd LP Let It Go at the Paradise Rock Club. Kicking off their fall tour, State Radio played a show that was billed as a ‘release party’ and featured a run through of the new album.  The band perfectly interspersed old favorites among the new tunes to lengthen the set list.

For generations, rock and roll artists have been pushing boundaries in the social and political scenes of their time; State Radio is no exception. The trio, consisting of Chad Stokes (guitar, lead vocals), Chuck Fay (bass, vocals, keys) and Michael “Maddog” Najarian (drums, vocals) is a rare breed in the music industry. Their unique sound, as well as commitment to community service and humanitarian efforts, has given the boys of State Radio a chance to give back to the community alongside their loyal fan base.

Outspoken, thought provoking, and original, the music of Boston’s rock-reggae trio State Radio touches on issues across the social and political landscape. Let It Go features lighthearted tunes about growing up in Boston, true love, and close friends. Blood Escaping Man, is an interesting twist on Homer’s Odyssey, telling the story of a young boy who is nearly seduced by Odysseus’ wife, who fears her husband to be deceased, while struggling to explain to her that the blood escaping man (Odysseus) is actually in hiding and will reveal himself to her soon. Conversely, other songs on the album highlight issues such as the Armenian Genocide; Robert Mugabe’s struggling Zimbabwe, and a general outcry pleading to the human race to evolve beyond our constant state of war and controversy.  The message to come together and finally realize our connection to one another as humans is prevalent throughout the entire album.  Meanwhile, album closer Still and Silent asks listeners, “How can we stay still and silent?” while living in a world where many people are oppressed by ruthless cruelty and tyranny.

The Paradise show featured special guests including the band member’s family and high school friends joining them on stage for a rousing group chorus of Knights of Bostonia. Additionally, the band treated attendees to a debut of yet another new, unreleased song (in true state radio fashion), and a drum solo by the one and only Jeremy of MTV’s “How’s Your News?”.  Created by Chad Stokes, the program is a one of a kind news show featuring reporters and anchors who have a range of disabilities. The show is meant to break down social boundaries in a fun, and informative manner.

Those who buy a ticket to any State Radio show this tour will receive a free copy of Let It Go after the show.
