Take Notice The Get-Go EP Review

By: Jonny Drybanski

Mike Duggan (vocals) Colin Guffey (guitar/vocals) Noah Fenton (guitar), Jack Mallinger (bass), and Trey Cook on drums comprise Take Notice, the pop-punk/hardcore group from Detroit, MI that is hoping for critics to take their name literally while listening to their debut EP The Get Go. Whether or not reviewers pick up on this subtle wordplay, it is instantly recognizable that Take Notice sound remarkably tight for a band in such early an early stage of development and whose Myspace page reads “We Need A Singer!”.

The Get Go gets going rapidly with And We Devised a Master Plan, the 31 second segue runs right into the first full track, Scratched CDs Are Nothing Compared To Missed Opportunities, without missing a beat.
Furious drum work by Trey Cook runs through the EP, keeping the rest of the band on track. At any rate, it still sounds as if each member could play their speedy parts with eyes closed and ears plugged. The higher range vocals complement the quickly grinding guitars nicely and have a free almost conversational cadence to them. This simultaneous independence and interplay in the band is a dynamic many bands take a few albums to fully attain, but Take Notice sounds as tight as any band getting ready for their second or third LP, let alone a debut EP.
As someone who doesn’t typically listen to this genre, I am impressed with the unity of sound that this band possess, and I find the clearly articulated vocals accessible in contrast to undecipherable screams that plague other groups.
