Residing right next to The Middle East Upstairs lays The Middle East Downstairs right in Cambridge, Mass. The two are divided by The Middle East Restaurant and completely different venues (in the same place of course). While the Upstairs has events like Throwed and have more local shows, the downstairs has mainly bigger shows with more known bands.
The entrance to the Downstairs is on the side of the restaurant and also the back of it too. When inside the venue it tends to feel smaller than it is and this definitely comes into play when it’s a sold out show. When going to a show here make sure you stay hydrated because it gets hot down there and when you’re pushed up against other people while a band is playing it can feel like an inferno. After a person experience of when a friend and I first went there, he almost passed out and normally he can handle any type of show. Just a word from the wise! The venue has a cooler of water which can be found in the back on the side.
Other than it getting hot down there, it’s small enough venue for anyone to get to meet the bands. Normally they hang in the back where the merch and bathrooms are located. They also can be found at the bar which is for anyone 21+ but you’re still able to talk to them.
The Middle East Downstairs may have its downsides but overall it’s had some really superb shows as well. Keep a look out for upcoming shows you may want to check out. Just make sure you stay hydrated and have a great time.
