The Summer Set Interview

Jay Rowland: You started out just a couple years ago. You’ve really burst into the music scene. You are gaining more fans all the time. What’s it like for you guys and how does it feel?

Jess Bowen: It’s an awesome experience for us. We have all been so appreciative of how great our fans are and with how much they support us.  Without them we wouldn’t be where we are and they have really helped us out so much.

Brian Dales: It’s definitely a whirlwind. It seems like we played our first show not that long ago. People are starting to really respond to our music and our live show and I love it.

Jay Rowland: What would you credit the fast fame to?

Jess Bowen: I would hope our music!  We really hope to reach out to as many people as possible with our music… so I hope that our popularity is based off of the music we have released.

Brian Dales: I wouldn’t really consider it this fast fame yet, but we’re working really hard and we’ve got a great team behind us.

Jay Rowland: Who writes the lyrics and who composes the music?

Jess Bowen: We pretty much all contribute to it all… John is definitely a “mastermind” behind it all though.

Brian Dales: It’s definitely a group effort. We all contribute.

Jay Rowland: What do you enjoy most about playing music?

Jess Bowen: I enjoy the feeling of making other people feel emotions through your music.

Brian Dales: I love playing shows. There is a ton of energy in our live show and the kids really get into it. Performing is the best feeling in the entire world.

Jay Rowland: Tell me about the writing process and inspiration behind the new album, Love Like This.

Jess Bowen: Well basically we had been waiting to record our first full length for a long time.  When we were finally given the opportunity to do it, there were many inspirations along the way.  We had a lot of songs written almost a year before we were even in the studio, and we used the time in the studio to write more new songs as well.  We just wanted the album to be appealing to all different types of audiences.

Brian Dales: We wrote Love Like This over the course of a year and we really wanted to make an album with a little bit of something for everyone. Our EP was 5 songs that all sounded very similar and we wanted to make sure Love Like This had a little bit more to offer.

Jay Rowland: What is your favorite song on the new album?

Jess Bowen: Where are you now? Mostly because I am more into “mellow” types of music like this song.

Brian Dales: Young and Where Are You Now?

Jay Rowland: Your tour with Cartel and This Providence has just begun. Excited?

Jess Bowen: So excited!  And it has been great so far.  Each show keeps getting better and better.

Brian Dales: Of course.

Jay Rowland: You’ve been on touring what seems like nonstop lately. How do you guys find any time for yourselves?

Jess Bowen: It’s hard to find time for your self, but I really don’t mind it. When you are in a band you are always busy with one thing or another, but I think that’s great. I would hate to be bored and never have anything to do with myself.

Brian Dales: I’ve gotten used to it, and we’re probably going to be on tour all of 2010 in support of the record.

Jay Rowland: And what do you like to do when you aren’t on tour or writing music?

Jess Bowen: I love seeing movies and trying out new restaurants.

Brian Dales: I like to play golf or hockey and see movies and hang out with some old friends. I’m pretty low key.

Jay Rowland: You’ve already toured with a lot of bands. The Cab, A Rocket To The Moon, just to name a couple. Who would you say has been the most inspiration to you guys while on tour?

Jess Bowen: Well we are great friends with pretty much all the bands we have toured with.  I couldn’t name one band in particular who has inspired us because I feel like all of the bands we have toured with have inspired us in one way or another.  We have been lucky to tour with some amazing bands and they all are so talented and we are appreciative to be a part of the music scene with them.

Brian Dales: Eye Alaska and A Rocket To The Moon have been our best friends on tour for sure.

Jay Rowland: What other bands have inspired you guys as a band?

Jess Bowen: The Format, Jimmy Eat World, Third Eye Blind

Brian Dales: My biggest influences personally have been The Format, Bruce Springsteen, John Mayer, Taylor Swift, Paul Simon, etc…

Jay Rowland: This ones for Jess, What’s it like traveling in a van with a bunch of guys?

Jess Bowen: I have gotten used to it for the most part.  There are times when it seems like a little much, but all I have to do is put on my headphones and zone it all out!

Jay Rowland: Any funny tour stories you want to share?

Jess Bowen: Too many to share. You will have to ask us when you see us in person.

Brian Dales: Over the summer on The Cab tour we crashed a wedding at a hotel we we’re staying at and ended up becoming best friends with the family and we stayed across the hall from R and B group Pretty Ricky. It was probably the funniest night of my entire life.

Jay Rowland: Hoping to go on Warped Tour in 2010?

Jess Bowen: Definitely. I have heard it is such a fun tour so I hope to do it sometime!

Brian Dales: Fingers crossed.

Jay Rowland: Anything you’d like to add that I didn’t ask about?

Jess Bowen: We love meeting our fans at shows, so please do not be shy to come up and talk to us whenever you see us!

Brian Dales: Check out our new album Love Like This and come see us in a city near you! Thanks!
